Cablevision earnings wear video deficits
Large NY-area cabler Cablevision Systems Friday saw earnings for that September quarter fall, revealing a loss of revenue of 19,000 video customers in the previous three-month period partially offset by an uptick in voice and-speed Internet biz. Net gain stepped to $40 million from $112 million. Company reported greater programming, marketing and advertising costs in addition to a $16 million hit from Hurricane Irene within the NY metro area at the end of summer time. Revenue rose 8% to around $1.7 billion, including contributions from Bresnan, a more compact cable operator acquired last December. Excluding Bresnan, Cablevision stated revenue could have been basically flat. Cablevision's amounts stressed what Time Warner Cable highlighted yesterday, a slippage of video subs to competition from telecom services like Verizon's Fios and perhaps, although will still be beginning, nascent inroads by new video streaming services like Netflix and Hulu yet others.
