'Iron Sky' producers make peace with pirates

MOSCOW -- The Finnish producers of a $10 million sci-fi Nazis on the moon spoof, "Iron Sky," have taken a counter intuitive approach after they found evidence that a Chinese games company had pirated their creative concept for an iPad game. Apple swiftly took the product out of its iPhone stores after "Iron Sky's" makers complained that Chinese company Ziiso was making an unlicensed game about the film. Rather than sue the company, "Iron Sky" creators are now in talks with the Chinese to make a legitimate iPad game. "The people at Ziiso apologized to the 'Iron Sky' team in an interview by the largest newspaper in Finland, Helsingin Sanomat," said "Iron Sky" director Timo Vuorensola. The filmmakers then invited Ziiso for talks about a better, authorized licensed version. "The honest and heartfelt apology by Ziiso and their willingness to correct their error convinced me that we could co-operate with them on the game project," Vuorensola added. "We are currently negotiating with Ziiso about revamping the game and publishing it as part of the official 'Iron Sky' merchandise lineup." "They say that an attack is the best form of defense, but instead of a costly legal battle we decided to try and strike a deal. If this succeeds, everybody wins," added producer Tero Kaukomaa of Helsinki's Blind Spot Pictures. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
