Trying to remember a childhood film...?

This was an odd one, and it's going back over 10 years. I can only
recall a tiny bit of it.
I think it was stop-motion. It was about a man who found a cave full
of candles. He blew one out and Death, or some cloaked figure, tells
him each candle represents a persons life. He either blew out his own
and must remain trapped or he had blown out someone else's and now
owed his life.
It was fairly dark and creepy, like most stop motion things in my
opinion. I seem to recall it was very much in the style of 'The Fool
of the World and the Flying Ship', but I may be wrong.
It's a long shot that anyone will know what I mean. But I hope someone
can help...
